Funny thing is. I'm not asking one because I want it so I can have more money, but the fact that I NEEDS it. My wife and I are expecting our first child in June and we crunched the numbers on our current monthly budget with what our current pay scale is and we will barely be floating by on what we have. No saving/no money for our weekly date nights.

I copied all my bills and printed off our monthly budget to show my boss today to show I'm not BS'ing him. Wish me luck.

Also, Ford Protoype for your time from Daytona:

Don't ask for a raise based on need. Ask for a raise based on merit.

Congrats on the little one! It may be a challenge, but it's all worth it.

I did the same thing with my Boss after about a year with our first kid. I just told him I was in the RED, it wasn't working. Thankfully he said not to ever let that happen again, and said "What do you need? Go crunch the numbers and tell me". I came back after crunching the numbers and BOOM big ass raise.

But that's cause I work for an awesome company with a cool boss (and my only boss is the CEO)

(also - good luck!)

just a word of advice as a boss and a dad of 2, don't bring the bills in. It makes you look like you don't make sound decisions, and it really isn't any of their business. Go in and show your strength and value to the company. You can mention having a kiddo coming as well but don't use it as a crutch.

And congrats!!! I wish you all the best in pregnancy and future parenthood!

1) This is why I wrap my whopper.

2) I heard my boss and admin assistant talking about raises, and that he'd only had one raise since working here (been here for almost a decade). It didn't make me get warm and fuzzies about my supposed out-of-cycle I'll be getting in March.

3) Good luck! Consider looking for another company.

Good luck getting a raise. But DON'T ask for it based on need, that will probably do more harm than good. I've seen guys do this and it basically put a stop to all future advancement with that employer. Earning a raise based on merit, and sometimes time, is the way to go.

No way am I the first to post Dr. Rumack. Anyway, good luck, we're all counting on you.

I'm contemplating asking for one in about a week and a half. Started here two years ago then, and haven't gotten any bumps since the initial (21 months ago).

What the others said. He is paying you for your work, not because he likes your family. Leave the bills out of it.

Other than that, congrats on the kid! And on all the other money stuff...welcome to middle class America, dude. Grab a seat someplace.

Unlike 505 Turbeaux I am not "the boss" but always ask based on merit.

Congrats and good luck.

Here we have a fairly regimented salary system. I literally cannot give raises without a big process of negotiating with other group leaders and potentially closing reqs or cutting other portions of my business line. We do a big pow-wow in December and outside of that the chances I can get all the pieces in place are pretty low. If your org is like that don't take it personally if nothing can be done.

Also, bringing in a pile o' bills wouldn't help your case here. The only way to really light a fire under my ass would be if you had another offer on the table. Be willing to look outside your company if this doesn't pan out.

Congratulations on the June behbeh! We're expecting one in June as well.

As far as the raise, I agree with everyone else: merit before need & leave the bills out of it.

Umm...to pile on with the other advice, DON'T DO THIS!

Either ask for a merit based increase, or start looking for another job. Yes, that sucks, but ultimately will be better for your career.

And if they say no to the increase based on merit, then start looking for a new job.

Just tell your boss you need a raise and that you've got 3 companies that want you. If he asks which ones tell him gas, electric, and cable.

Yeaaaaa, agreed... if that was a smart career move I could just fatten myself up for a month once a year and then point at my faux preggo tummy with puppy dog eyes and an open hand, then just get teary-eyed if anyone asked when I was due or why I got skinny again.

DISCLAIMER: DO NOT TRY THAT IT IS A BAD PLAN. I AM KIDDING AND NO ONE WOULD DO THAT UNLESS THEY ARE A SOCIOPATH

I test drove one once (got $100 for the pleasure) and it's amazing how quickly that thing reaches ludicrous speed. I pushed it pretty hard - the salesman really got a kick out of it. Guess he doesn't get too many who do that.

Update. It was my yearly review (yes, I read where I shouldn't ask about it during this time, but I have a very hands off boss so it's one of the few times I talk to him face-to-face) and the review went great so that's good news (went better than expected actually).

Meh news. Getting a raise/bonus are still up in the air.. Not because of my performance or anything.. Long story short it has to deal with 2013 was a really bad year of the company (worst ever I believe) and 2014 we really re-gained what we lost in 2013 and it may/may not be enough for raises/bonuses (gulp) so we'll see what happens. My boss responded well to my situation (because the performance review went so well I didn't feel the need to go all in with my situation) and promised he'd look into it when they figure out what to do so that's good. I told him I was willing to talk about it more if need to and negotiate a different number that I first asked. He promised he was going to figure out something for us (me and the other employees in my dept; 4 of us total) and already has an idea in his head but didn't want to tell us what it is yet (1. For us not to get our hopes up 2. In case it ends up being something different).

So at this point I'm expecting the worst and hoping/praying for the best. My wife and I won't be under water if I don't get a raise, but we will a very small tightrope over the water if I don't so we'll see.
